2019 began on a heavy note as veteran actor and writer Kader Khan died on December 31 (January 1, according IST) this year. He slipped into a coma and breathed his last at a hospital in Canada. The funeral was held today in Toronto. A few of his family members, including his son Sarfaraz were present.

Khan had been complaining of breathlessness for quite some time. He was also suffering from pneumonia.

Kader Khan had been struggling with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a degenerative disease that causes loss of balance, difficulty in walking and dementia.

Kader Khan, who was born in Kabul, made his Bollywood debut with Daag, which had Rajesh Khanna in the lead role. Following this, Khan had an expansive career, as he acted in over 300 films over three decades. He had won several awards and accolades for films like Angaar, Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri, and Meri Awaz Suno. He was also recognised by the AFMI (American Federation of Muslims from India) for his achievement and service to the Muslim community in India.

After Kader Khan’s death, his son Sarfaraz told IANS, “It is the way the Indian film industry has become now. There are too many fragmented camps and loyalties. The out-of-sight-out-of-mind mentality can’t be helped. My father always told us, his sons, not to expect anything from anybody and we grew up with the belief that one must do what is required in life and expect nothing in return.”

“There are so many people in the film industry whom my father was close to. But the one person that my father loved the most was Bachchan saab (Amitabh Bachchan). I’d ask my father whom he missed the most from the film industry and the answer promptly would be Bachchan Saab. And I know the love was mutual. I want Bachchan saab to know that my father spoke about him till the end,” he added.
