The Accidental Prime Minister Box Office Collection Day 1: Anupam Kher’s Film Gets Lukewarm Response

Directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, The Accidental Prime Minister revolves around the two-term tenure of former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh in office and features Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna in the lead roles. The film was not off to a very impressive start at the box office.

This week, two big Bollywood films opened in theatres – Aditya Dhar’s Uri: The Surgical Strikes, starring Vicky Kaushal and Yami Gautam, and Vijay Ratnakar Gutte’s The Accidental Prime Minister, starring Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna. The former has demolished the latter at the box office on the opening day.

According to early estimates, The Accidental Prime Minister, which released in 1300 screens across the country, managed to earn only around Rs 1.50 crore on its first day. Meanwhile, Uri: The Surgical Strikes reportedly made around Rs 5 crore.

The Accidental Prime Minister, based on Sanjaya Baru’s book of the same name, chronicles former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s tenure in office. The film alleges that his functioning was hampered by then-president of the Congress, Sonia Gandhi, who controlled everything that happened in the PMO with an iron fist.

India Today critic Samrudhi Ghosh writes in her review, “Directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, The Accidental Prime Minister, based on the book of the same name by Dr Manmohan Singh’s former media advisor Sanjaya Baru, comes across as a half-truth and full propaganda against the Indian National Congress ahead of the 2019 general elections.”

Anupam Kher, who plays Dr Manmohan Singh in The Accidental Prime Minister, has called it his career-best performance. He also refuted allegations that the film favoured the ruling party. “We have made this film with a lot of sincerity and we don’t have any political agenda behind the release of the film,” he told IANS in an interview.

The collection of The Accidental Prime Minister is expected to witness a boost, over the weekend. However, it remains to be seen if the film manages to overtake Uri: The Surgical Strikes at the box office.
